NCCR RNA & Disease at Scientifica 2023

This year's Scientifica ran under the theme "What holds the world together" and over 20'000 people visited the exhibition on September 2 and 3 at the three venues of ETHZ and the University of Zurich. The NCCR RNA & Disease presented a booth with the title "Take a dive into the world of RNA-protein droplets" and tours of a molecular biology lab and the NMR labs were offered.

At the NCCR stand, visitors could mix protein droplets and observe under the microscope how they change when RNA is added. In the second experiment section for children, there were four experiments on the topic of phase separation of oil and water and surface tension. In addition, visitors were able to play a game about the role of the protein TDP-43 in cellular homeostasis and explore its 3D structures in complex with RNA. Visitors were also able to explore the "Molecool-Cosmos RNA" website and watch five videos featuring NCCR researchers made as part of the "NCCR-Women" campaign.

The content of the stand was created by NCCR Scientific Officers and the Allain, Jonas and Polymenidou labs. Researchers at the booth were from the labs of Allain, Barral, Buehler, Corn, Hall J, Jonas, Leitner, Muehlemann, Polacek and Thiel. The laboratory tours were conducted by members of the Gossert (NMR platform) and Allain laboratories.
